01 The story, in three paragraphs

Why everyone keeps coming back.

Pempek Mamad is a beloved culinary gem nestled in the heart of Kota Jambi, Indonesia, specializing in authentic Palembang-style pempek — a savory fish cake delicacy that locals and visitors alike crave. Situated along Jl. HOS. Cokroaminoto No.74, this restaurant masterfully showcases a variety of pempek options, each bursting with bold flavors and crafted with care.

The menu is a vibrant celebration of traditional Indonesian flavors, featuring favorites like Pempek Campur, Tekwan, Model, and the iconic Pempek Kapal Selam — a delightful fish cake filled with egg that offers a perfect balance between texture and taste. For those seeking a smoky twist, the Pempek Panggang (grilled pempek) delivers an irresistible charred aroma that enhances the naturally delicate fish flavors. Other treats like Otak Otak come with their own subtle spices and texture contrasts, while Model Gandum introduces nuttier notes thanks to its wheat-based composition.

What truly sets Pempek Mamad apart is its signature cuko — the rich, tangy, and notably spicy vinegar-sweet sauce accompanying the pempek. Customers repeatedly praise this bold dressing, noting it as spicier and more flavorful than typical versions, lending each bite an exciting punch that leaves you wanting more. This distinct sauce transforms familiar textures into an extraordinary indulgence.

Beyond the savory offerings, Pempek Mamad also charms guests with its unique beverage selection, such as the Es Kacang Merah (red bean ice) and Ice Campur Durian, desserts praised for their rich, refreshing sweetness that balance the savory heat perfectly. Reviews from regulars describe these cold treats as “delicious” and “unmatched anywhere else,” with the durian ice particularly standing out as a must-try.

The dining atmosphere is straightforward and casual, reminiscent of a traditional Indonesian eatery where the focus is on delivering authentic tastes rather than extravagant decor. While the ambiance may be modest, it fosters a genuine, local vibe that complements the homely, satisfying food. A note for visitors: parking can be a bit tight, but the culinary delights make the effort worthwhile.

Pempek Mamad represents more than just a meal; it’s an invitation to savor Jambi’s beloved street food with a twist. Whether you’re a pempek connoisseur or a curious traveler eager to experience regional Indonesian flavors, this restaurant promises a memorable, flavorful journey steeped in tradition and bold spice.

I know this place from my friend. The pempek or fish cake itself is regular like other place. They provide a lot of variety if pempek like pempek lenjer, pempek kapal selam (pempek with egg filling), pempek tahu (tofu), pempel kulit (from fish skin) which is my favorite. The differnce thing about this place is their cuko (pempek dressing) that a lot spicier than any other place. Their speciality other than pempek is es kacang merah (red bean ice dessert) and they also provide other jambi specialities like lenggang temwan and so on.

The place is just average, just like another resto. But the food seemed good (my friend said that). I just try their Durian Ice with red beans, and it is great!
